Lots of people actually lose weight while they have IBS, all that counts in kcal intake and Heather does not advocate a high kcal diet by any means. Her diet is v healthy and there's no reason you should be gaining weight. Her recommendations have the macros (protein carbs fat) in proportions and I think it's a bit of a myth that wholegrains keep obesity at bay and without wholegrains you'll get fat. IF may keep you full longer, but only a little longer... there's a whole host of other factors that help with filling you up - protein, high water foods and high fibre foods (SF or IF) all help with this. There is also something called fullness factor - potatoes are great and fill you up v quickly for the little kcal they contain.

lastly, the thing that has certainly helped me whenever I wanted to lose weight was eating 6 or even more times per day, basically every two hours, small meals so you never have hunger. I can drastically reduce the kcal this way (in my case as was often proved in the past far too much actually)

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]
