FODMAPS and Total Fructose Load

Here's a post I recently posted to a FODMAP board and I was wondering what comments people here had. I would be very interested to know Syl's comments on how the total fructose load may impact fructose malabsorption and possibly IBS:

I have fructose malabsorption, and possibly IBS-C. I have just started combining the FODMAP diet with the EFI diet and have been seeing great results so far!

A question I have, though, is in regards to the total fructose load. I understand that fructose is absorbed when in equal proportion with glucose. However, based on my research, there are only so many transporters available, and the total amount of fructose (even if in balance w/ glucose) can also be a problem. The total grams of fructose an individual can handle at each individual sitting varies greatly, and it would be beneficial to estimate how much I can personally handle.

I have been tracking my diet, and have just now begun tracking the total fructose load. It looks like the fructose content of a food would be 1/2 of the sucrose content (b/c it's equal amounts glucose/fructose) plus any free fructose. I'm not sure how to deal with fructans yet. Based on that info, I looked into a recent meal I had (estimated total fructose is in parenthesis):

(5.95) Banana, 1 medium (during cooking)
(1.25) Russet potatoes, with skin
(0.00) Extra Virgin Olive Oil
(0.00) 4 Egg Whites, 1 Whole Egg
(0.01) 1/4 Cup Baby Spinach
(1.40) 1/4 Cup Bell Pepper, Red
(0.00) 1 Small Turkey Sausage
(17.30) 12oz fresh Orange Juice, no pulp
(3.80) 1 Kiwi Fruit, medium

None of the above items should have had any FODMAPS or fructose in excess of glucose. The spinach may have trace amounts of fructans. The total fructose in this meal, as I see it, is around 29.71g of fructose....and, the orange juice is over half of that number!

This seems like the meal would be okay in regards to FODMAPS, but that I would have very likely overdone it on total fructose load. How important does the total fructose load seem to be? Do a lot of the people here manage it? Are my numbers correct on orange juice...it seems very high!

Thanks a lot
