Welcome to the board,

There are three general classes of IBS.

IBS-D - three or more BM per days
IBS-C - three or less BM per week
IBS-A - alternating between IBS-C and IBS-D

The feeling of incomplete BM is common to all three types.

However, in the ROME III criteria for diagnosing functional bowel disorders such as IBS says "Because of the characteristic symptom instability, we prefer the terms IBS with constipation and IBS with diarrhea instead of constipation- and diarrhea-predominant IBS. In this categorical system, many people whose features place them close to a subtype boundary change pattern without a major change in pathophysiology."

It goes on to say "Patient reports of "diarrhea" and "constipation" may mislead physicians. The stool may be solid, though defecation is frequent (pseudodiarrhea). Conversely, straining to defecate may occur with soft or watery stools. Some patients feel constipated because they have unproductive urges to defecate or feelings of incomplete evacuation that prompt them to strain after passing stool."

Stress is known to effect IBS symptoms.
