Microscopic Colitis is classified as an IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). This terminology is not to be confused with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Lymphocytic and Collagenous Colitis are the 2 main subtypes of Microscopic Colitis.

The diagnosis of LC was arrived at in your son's case by taking biopsies of the colon wall during the colon exam, and then having a pathologist analyze the specimens under a microscope. (This is why is called Microscopic Colitis as it can only be diagnosed in this manner.) In MC the inflammatory disease process is NOT located in the lining of the colon, rather it is located in the tissues of the colon structure that are beneath the mucosal lining of the colon. This type of colitis is unusual in children, but is NOT UNHEARD OF in children either.
