First, eating often in small amounts is good for IBS but I can understand the fear of being hungry all the time. I have that and hate it very much. When I started the diet I lost almost 15 pounds from cutting out all unsafe food and eating low in fat 100% of the time. Since then I have gained weight and am hungry all the time. I don't want to have to eat so much bread, cereals, bananas, potatoes and that kind of thing but in switching to a different diet for weight loss like South Beach for instance, my IBS would be even worse. Sometimes you have to choose the lesser of two evils. However, when you really want to eat safe for IBS and reduce simple carbs you can do it. One thing is to use your SFS as a SF food source- eating something IF after the SFS (if large enough). SF veggies and fruits can be eaten instead of SF carbs/grains. Also some can handle slightly better carbs like brown rice, quinoa and other grains and the better pastas out now, but some cannot. Anyone with IBS can cut out sugar. I'm not sure about the high GI index in fruit. I thought because of its fiber it has a lower GI index.
-------------------- IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
