Sorry, in my case, the search didn't go well! Months of waiting for appts, docs we didn't like, starting over, finding out that ultimately none of them could really do anything to help. (The doc we kept was at least sympathetic and honest, tho still provided ZERO relief.) ITMT, a bad situation turned into a horror, as more bad experiences equalled more stress. I wish you a better journey!
I will not be surprised if the lack of replies to your question reflects the fact that my experience might not be uncommon, and maybe everyone is waiting for someone else with a better experience to be the one to give the advice! (Tho I sincerely hope not!)
I'm trying to look back and think of what I might advise to someone else to help avoid the worst. I suppose I'd have to suggest doing everything possible to de-stress while going thru this process. Respect the fact that it could cause significant stress to someone who is already significantly stressed, and while that's true for anyone who is in a position to need a specialist, the nature of IBS makes it even more of an important issue.
Wishing you well, kem (daughter w/ibs-d)
