Perhaps someone has some knowledge or thoughts on this one...

It seems in European countries (particularly France) wine is a part of their meal. I never thought much about that other than wine perhaps helps relax the stresses of the day, and one can eat relaxed. They also eat their salad AFTER a meal, so they were IBS smart before their time.

Now I've come to wonder if the theory behind wine with a meal that goes back centuries had to do with actually increasing stomach acid to aid digestion. Even in the bible, people drank wine with meals.

Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not interested in drinking wine with meals. I'm simply wondering about the food and wine connection. Was is purely a social thing, or did they have some philosophy that wine was in fact something that helped digest food?

As far as I know, I do not have low stomach acid. Some people do. From what I understand so far, alcohol is not good for the IBS gut. I do, however, like a splash or two of some cooking wines while preparing a dish. It seemingly does enhance the flavor and help tenderize at the same time.

Sometimes I'm just curious about worldly cultures and their original theories on some things that have been long lost in today's cultures. It seems in the USA, many people drink to get drunk, as opposed to any other understandable reason beyond addiction.
