For one person a food may cause gas and/or discomfort while for others it may be a trigger. For example hydrogen gas is a byproduct of fermentation. A rapid increase in gas for some IBSers may produce discomfort, in others the increased pressure may induce spasms and in others the hydrogen gas is converted to methane gas by other bowel bacteria increasing constipation.
