Hey! First off, I'm a scientist, and I used to work on antibiotics! The problem with Cipro, as everyone has said, is that it also kills off the GOOD bacteria in your system, not just in your gut but everywhere. It can also promote resistance - in case you've been following the news, bacterial resistance is a HUGE problem. By taking something long term, bacteria that are resistant to the drug will survive, multiply, and then can be passed on to others. And these "operons" , sequences that code for resistance to MULTIPLE antibiotics, can be triggered by one antibiotic but result in the bugs being resistant to many. So if down the road, you get a bacterial infection, antibiotics might not work!
I've read studies where Rifampicin works for IBS, but what's good about that drug is that it doesn't leave the intestine, so it only hits bugs in your GI, leaving the rest of your body alone. Its usually used for traveller's diarrhea. Studies have shown that a 10 day course of Rifampicin alleviated IBS symptoms for well over 6 weeks. So taking a course of this drug instead, for 10 days at a time, every few months, might be the way to go, to avoid all the other issues that come with taking an antibiotic long term.
