Antibiotics are extremely pure and under no condition do they contain fungal toxins. This web page gives a reasonably good overview on how antibiotics are manufactured. The major concerns with long term antibiotic use is the possibility of enabling an antibiotic resistant microorganism to establish itself and the possibility of causing die-off of good bacteria particularly in the colon. The later is of particular concern for IBSers. See this web page on the National Cancer Institute for a discussion about the possible relationship between the increase use of antibiotics and breast cancer. The Center for Disease Control has a web page with an FAQ explaining when antibiotics do and do not work. Also it has a good discussion about antibiotic resistance. If you do decide to take Cipro under your doctor's supervision please tell us how it goes.
