I think sometimes the stress from having to follow a strict diet contributes to IBS even without having to eat trigger foods. Every time I go out I start getting slightly stressed out when they hand me the menu. I haven't even eaten anything and I already worry about whether it's going to make me sick, thinking about all kinds of ingredients that could have sneaked into my meal without me realizing it. Usually I end up getting sick anyway. I can't have a stress-free meal because I know I'll get sick so I worry about it up front.
