I have been diagnosed with an incredible amount of allergies as well. Cow Dairy, Guar Gum (seriously), Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic, on and on. I too was told to quit eating any dairy products about 7 years ago, and felt great for a few years. I was then diagnosed with IBS, but was just told to reduce fried foods and take more fiber. About 6 months ago, I went to a strict boiled chicken and plain baked potato diet for a week and slowly began to add one item back to my diet each week. I was so sick. I have had colonoscopies, endoscopies, CT scans.....you name it. Everything comes back as normal. Very frustrating. I think that a colonoscopy is a good preventative measure. I just think that traditional doctors know so little about IBS and it is up to us to investigate and find out what we can do to help ourselves and others.
For me, the IBS diet works, but it can be pretty tough. Recently I began taking Prilosec daily, and I must say that I feel better than I have in many years. I did this based on my own research, even after my GI said after the last endoscopy that he saw no signs of GERD. Maybe it is psychological, maybe not. I will try anything if it will help me to eat more than boiled chicken and plain potatoes.
