Why is it ok to stay on Miralax but not other laxatives?

I have read a bit about the different actions of laxatives but I can't seem to understand how the Miralax is different from, say, run of the mill type laxatives like Exlax, etc. Is it because the others irritate the intestines to keep things moving faster? And the Miralax does....what then?

FWIW, I have been taking a half dose of the Miralax for a week now and it is working really well for me *so far.* I went to the full dose yesterday but today went back down to 3/4 dose. I will stay on this stuff forever if it keeps working...and it's safe....I would just like to take the lowest dose possible that works for me.

ETA: I understand that it "draws water into the stools" ...but does this really make it a laxative then? I guess I have always thought of the term "laxative" as irritating and something you shouldn't stay on for long periods of time, and something that you build up a tolerance for...but none of this seems true for the Miralax.
