I'm sorry, I goofed on my first post. I have been on Questran for one year. I had my gallbladder out in 2000 and have had D ever since/even though on questran on and off. Questran does bind bile acids and diahrea but has many side effects/some longterm dangerous - and does nothing for colon spasms - which I also have. I have wondered if I have IBS ALSO or in addition/my gastro doesn't know (have had 2 colonoscopies they show nothing)
I have had to cut back on the Questran because I became vitamin ADEK defecient which again, can be a predictable side effect. I found this board and I DID call my doctor and asked him about trying caltrate d to absorb bile and he DID say okay - no problem and it IS working it seems to make me feel better/sslllowwly - it works like questran to absorb BILE -yes from what I've read. My gastro does not know if I have IBS and doesn't want me on anything else while taking the questran (accept the caltrate is okay) because he DOES know that I have bile salt D for sure.

The questran is prescribed for my excess bile problem, however a HIGH soluable fiber diet/YOUR diet is also extremely helpful for people with post cholestectomy bile salt-D because it is high in soluable fiber and is low in gi irritant foods.

Nancy
