Hello to all of you! I can't begin to express how thankful I am to have found this website and these message boards.
I am a wife to Ron and mother to six children-- 5 girls and 1 boy ages 14 -20. We live on a small farm in Southwest Iowa about 45min from downtown Omaha, Ne.
I started having symptoms about 11yrs ago after a terrible food poisoning incident. It started out fairly simple and didn't really get me down that much but i went to the doctor because i just didnt 'feel' normal. I was so exhausted and the bloating and dull ache in the mid section really started bothering me. I also started having days of C followed by severe D. They did an ultrasound to check for ovarian cancer and ran alot of blood work ect and then basically told me i must have chronic fatigue and just to live with it. Over the next couple years the D started getting worse and worse. I finally went back to the doctor and they again ran tests and finally did a colonoscopy and diagnosed me as IBS. The only thing they told me was to up my fiber-- which didn't make sense to me as we grow most of our food and i was already averaging 30- 40grams of fiber a day!! How could i possibly up it?? I went home and changed our diet (again!!)to more fresh whole grains and more veggies and fruits ect and got it up to 40-50 grams. As you can already tell, i was uping the wrong kind of fiber and i really paid for it in much worse attacks more frequently. My husband was starting to really worry, and thankfully my children are older and take care of themselves and me very well or i dont know what i would have done! I was just feeling so low and so desperate! I was really praying for some help here! One day after having another rough morning, i googled IBS and found this website. I have spent alot of time reading the whole website and studying the diet and everything. Then i went the recipe boards and started with the what to eat when you can't eat anything. It has already made such a difference in my life! For several weeks i hardly ate as i was afraid to put anything in my mouth. But now it has been a week since i have had D and i am not C either! I was so overwelmed with it all for several days as I realized everything i had been taught (high fiber stuff) was not only not helping but it was making it WORSE! I have had to change my thoughts so much on food and health ect, but it has made so much more sense and has made such a difference for me!
Thankyou to all of you who have posted both questions, answers, and recipes. I am so very thankful to each of you! And thankyou,Heather, for pulling this all together and giving us hope and real help! I told my husband i learned more in a hour from your website than i have learned from 3 specialists and 10 yrs of trying to get answers!
