I used Prilosec on and off for awhile and it worked. Within days of going off of it, GERD symptoms would return. Then, my doc started me on Nexium which has been WONDERFUL - until I surprised myself by finding out last week that I am pregnant. So, I stopped the Nexium and 50 mg Zoloft immediately. My gp said it is okay to stay on both but, after two healthy daughters, I had a miscarriage in 2004 and don't want to regret anything if I lose this one, too. Back to the Nexium - I did not notice any side effects. In fact, I was able to eat more foods like oranges (at the end of a meal). Between being in my 6th week of pregnancy at age 39 and going off the Nexium, I have to say I have been miserable again. Also, my abdominal distention has returned. I didn't burp at all on the Nexium. Also, because the Nexium dealt with my GERD, I was able to focus more on IBS triggers. My IBS seemed so much better on the Nexium. I have no idea how it could help IBS. Perhaps my GERD has just been worse than my IBS. Of course, anything could happen now. I hope my ob (first visit is not for 4 more weeks) approves going back on Nexium once I get through the first trimester. I will be able to eat a more varied diet without GERD trouble.
