What you do get is hormone withdrawal bleeding, but that's not the same thing as a period. There's a very complete discussion of this at The Well-Timed Period. The short form: you can skip the hormone withdrawal bleeding with no issues. It was just included in the original pill regimen to make it seem more "natural". As I've said before, I'm on NuvaRing and I feel that it makes my IBS better since I'm not putting the hormones into my digestive system.
