I agree with the other posters: as you eat less fat, it takes more food volume to get the same number of calories but overeating is tough on us IBSers. So eat more often and be sure to get protein. For example, your husband could get 2 6-inch Subway sandwiches and eat one for lunch and the other at the point in the afternoon when he's starving.

And please, please be sure his doctor does the necessary tests to rule out other conditions. It is likely that what he has is IBS but when someone develops digestive tract problems the other culprits need to be ruled out. If your husband is like mine it might take some serious nagging to get him to do stuff like a colonoscopy, but it's really, really, really important.

More generally (for everyone on the Boards): I'm going to be really boring and repetitive about this for a while because the wife of a good friend of my husband's was just diagnosed with colon cancer. She's in her early 50s and went to the doctor because she had what felt like terrible gas and indigestion. Her prognosis is excellent but it's still a scary, scary thing. So if you're over 50 or your IBS symptoms have just started or your symptoms have changed recently or you have a family history of colon cancer, please get screened. My husband just got the info on doing a colonoscopy and the way our doctor does it now it's only about 24 hours without solid food and the liquids you can have include yogurt and ice cream (non-dairy for us IBSers, of course). The most common form of colon cancer can be caught in its pre-cancerous state so GET TESTED.
