The intestines are mucous membranes, much like your nose is. You always have a little bit of mucus in your nose, it helps protect the membranes. But when you have a cold or allergies, for instance, you may produce more of it.

So if I see a lot of mucus coming out on the other end, I take it as a sign that something I ate recently has caused irritation.
