I guess I should have done a search before posting my question as I see it has been discussed in the past. The only thing I would add is that my husband did NOT have an overgrowth of bacteria but the rifaximin still helped him, and at the time he took it - it was prescribed for only 3 days. If you're desperate for help, I don't think it hurts to give it a try. Our GI doctor felt the same way. This time he will try it for the prescribed 10 days. His only side affect last time was nausea. Our GI doctor also siggested trying VSL3 about which we have heard lot of good things. Happy Holidays!
