A doctor who does not have IBS (or any other particular disease) has read about it somewhere and is trying to help, but does not know from experience. Sometimes doctors forget that medicine is an art, not an all or nothing thing! With all advice you get from the doctor - remember that what you do and how you feel is completely up to you! You can heed their advice and try it or you can continue with the supplements if you think they work for you! The problem with medicine is that everyone is different and advice for one person may not work while it works for another! With IBS, this is particulary frustrating becuase medical doctors know so little about it...it is not like blood pressure, where everyone gets the same treatment. I count myself as lucky to have IBS, because I think that it will help me be a better physician...I know what it is like! In terms of your constipation, I would suggest fiber (you are probably already doing that) and lots and lots and lots of water! I know some people think it is gross but prune juice seems to work wonders for some people...and by all means, if you don't trust your doctor...switch!!! I hope this makes you feel better! Take care!
