You take a laxative that clears out your GI system so that your doc can see clearly how everything looks. That is the day before. The day of your appt. you'll go in early to prep. They'll knock you out and next thing you know, it's all over. You'll expel gas for a day or two from the colonoscopy. Just let them know that you don't want to be anywhere near awake.
