Hi all,

Am taking Phenegran ( generic is promethazine for my IBS D). Started taking it after having ACUTE D after almost a mo. of Levaguin antibiotic last Jan. Cleared up the D VERY quickly. The Doc there actually put me on it cause you could practically hear my stomach growling in the NEXT ROOM!!!!!!!!

Didn't have pain then.......that I remember. I was in FL at the time.

After returning north, got the ACUTE D back July 4 and went back to close to reg. dose of it but this time it didn't clear up the D !!!! It REALLY took care of the PAIN tho quite well. Trouble was I didn't have much of the Promenthazine. Worked far better than Librax for pain. At that point, I had been on Librax again (out of promenthazine) and began to think IT was MAKING ME GO!!!, as I seemed to go after taking it quite often.

My question is: Promenthazine is for NAUSEA, but it works VERY well for the IBS D and PAIN. THEN.......the GI put me on Levbid 1 x da. before bed and it made me dizzy, weak, exhausted and heart skipping & some palpitations. (I had written this on my allergies to meds. --- the fact that anything w/adrenaline, caffeine, Nodoz, Triaminic, etc.)made my heart race. Daughter was allergic to Triaminic and anything else like that too as a child.....made her like a zombie. She was NORMALLY quite a placid child! Also, my brother was allergic to milk and eggs as a toddler.... probably.

I should also mention here that I started taking calcium which I feel has helped immensely for the D and urgency.

It seems that I'm FINALLY getting somewhat stabilized!!!!!!!! Sure hope it continues!

When I finally got to talk to him (the GI) for a sec. last week after my husband had his colonoscopy, he put me bk on Librax after I mentioned the symptoms above. He didn't really talk to me.......just caught him when he came in re hubby's results, and he said he'd write the Librax.

I REALLY WANTED TO TALK TO HIM!!!!!!!!!! I kinda faked some PAIN in front of nurse who wondered what was wrong. Cause, as someone on here said..." A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do" and I FINALLY figured that was right & worth a try!!!!!

Asked to talk to him, but they said he was catching up on computer and was GRUMPY if disturbed!!!!!!! So.......I left the bldg and got ALMOST TO THE CAR when the nurse came calling after ME!!!!!!! Said he would talk to me. AMAZING.!!!!!

I was a bit fuzzy then.......had been a long wait cause hubby had to be premedicated, etc. ANYWAY, talked to him for a couple minutes telling him that Promethazine seemed to work well. SOOOOOO he tore up the Librax pres. and said he'd rather have me on the Promethazine anyway!!!!!!!!

Ny Internist was deathly against that drug........., but w/now have to call HIM for the Prome....! That's a FEAT in itself..getting HER to call anywhere/anyone!!!!

Am so long winded. Sorry.

My point is: Since the promethazine works on the stomach, and is for nausea (which I don't have!!!) & (when I got the D back in July , didn't have growling stomach), and the Librax relieves spasms in the colon, WHY WOULD THE PROMETHAZINE WORK BETTER!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????? and RELIEVE THE SPASMS???

Am trying to figure this out and all I can think of is that somehow it neutralizes whatever is in the food so that by the time it gets to the colon.......there is nothing to upset the colon and cause spasms!

This is why I'm wondering abt. the overgrowth of bacteria thing which I THINK (pls. correct me if I'm wrong!!!) needs to be diagnosed under Clostridium Difficle. NEITHER DOC. has done any tests except Basic Metabolism & lipid panel by internist and celiac/gluten by GI. I do have a test set up for lactose intolerance fr. GI that I practically had to beg the PA for.

I should also mention that I was diagnosed in '99 w/ GERDS and am on Prevacid for that which does a great job re the GERDS. Funny......cause I had never had any acid reflux to speak of and all of a sudden had GERDS. This same GI did the endoscopy to diagnose the GERDS. The Prevacid was actually helping w/ my IBS symptoms for quite some time too.

Don't know how I'm gonna get those other tests, cause Internist w/say the GI didn't order them!!!!! BUT I REALLY THINK THEY SHOULD BE DONE!

Heard of 2 really great GI docs. here who actually ARE interested in IBS, but no appt till Jan AND THEY WANT A REFERRAL fr. your PRIMARY. Am sure she won't give that as she knows of the other GI of course. Wonder what to do abt. that????

Well, thanks for ANY ideas or recommendations you can give me. Really appreciate it. The above is the ONLY REASON I can think of as to why the promenthazine might help, but sure hope someone has some input on this!!!!!!!!!

I should mention that I am STILL VERY careful w/my diet and stick to pretty much bland.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!
