Most of the pain under the ribs and in the upper area is the food coming back up and burning (gross I know, sorry). You should be on a medication like Zantac or Nexium to help with that. The costipation does sound like IBS and yes it can switch from diarreah to constipation without warning. IBS can be constant for some people (like me) where as others it comes and goes like yours does. If your GP has diagnosed it as IBS then that's probably what it is. Stress is also a major trigger for IBS symtoms (like me for instance, stress is more of a trigger for me than food).
