I care. Well, actually, I do care, but frankly, bottom line, this is better than a soap opera. Families are weird.
I wonder why MIL said she recommended it. Did she really in some bizarre coincidence or did she not, but senses trouble and is trying to draw some of the fire for BIL's insensitivity? (See, better than a soap opera.)
My experience with family and friends has been that they want to do the right thing by me foodwise, but they just cannot figure it out. The way I eat now is so contradictory to everything they've been told about "diets", they just can't get their minds around it. A particularly big stumbling block is the idea that I cannot just "cheat" on Heather's diet, then diet harder the next day - you know, like you can with calorie-reduction diets.
BTW, I still vote for having a lunch of an appetizer or two. If your in-laws knew the $50 won't go far, they can hardly be insulted if you try to keep the bill down.
