Hey Amy, I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to these things as well. And while the vega diet did do wonders for me (BTW, my first consult was $450!!! geez I was duped by all the pills and potions he prescribed!!), my naturopath has never been able to fully explain how the test works and why certain foods were eliminated. Which is pretty dodgy, and why I'm currently doing a detection diet (like an elimination diet) instead. The people who are supporting me with the detection diet (its web based) believe that one can solve almost all digestive problems through diet alone, and there is no need for supplements, pills and potions, as these are only a quick fix, they can irritate the bowel even more, and aren't addressing the root causes for digestive disorders.
Sooooo I'm eliminating gluten and dairy as my first test, and I'm also watching my sugar and yeast intake (I'm going to test them properly in a couple of weeks time).
I'm already so much more knowledgeable about food intolerances and the symptoms they cause in my body. I felt I needed to take control of my diet, instead of relying on my allergist to test me each month and say 'yay' or 'nay' to certain foods. The only test you can truly trust is the one you do yourself, on yourself, as your symptoms are the key.
Good luck! Let me know how you go! And I'll dig up some yummy recipes to keep us food challenged people inspired
