I hope I can explain this satisfactorily but if not, please, others help. The bacteria in your gut does feed on sugars and carbs that have made into sugars, yet that shouldn't be taken at face value. Some people go on complete gluten and carb free diets to avoid the production of gas in the intestines. This is an oxymoron because your gut cannot be healthy on that sort of diet. So the primary thing is to make your gut healthy and happy and then, even if you eat all carbs, you won't be gassy. And the only way to make it happy is to eat things that are gentle on it and give it something to grip, as Heather says. By stabilzing the gut with soluble fiber, which is easy to pass through, the reaction of producing gas will be minimized and this cannot happen without soluble fiber. My doctor could explain it much better. Remember there is a lot of conflicting and erroneous information out there. Even many doctors don't keep up to date!
Also studies show that the gas products like gas X and phazyme actually do not make a lot of difference to gas amounts in the intestines. They are marketed that way but they are only found to 1) break large gas bubbles into smaller ones 2) cause upper tract gas to be burped out. So carbs are the bad guys right now and Phazyme knows this and wants to scare people into buying their product.
I sure hope the forecasters are right about the low carb thing going out of style in 2005!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
