Hiya Sam! I take far more than 1 imodium a day, and have never had problems pooping, though I can understand your hesitancy trying out new meds. I got tired taking imodium only when I was really ill, so I started taking it about 10 years ago right before eating, to prevent attacks. It works better for me this way, because now I don't have to wait until I'm in pain. This way, I just don't get the pain in the first place.
The other thing is that when I'm having an attack I don't have to go diving in to my purse trying to find the little buggers, wondering if I've used the last of them the day before. Yikes! It's bad when I panic, because I don't think I'm going to get to them in time and the anxiety increases the pain and duration of the attack.
Imodium also works for D attacks brought on by panic or anxiety, not only by food. My worst attacks are at night or first thing when I get up, and occur nowhere near when I last ate. Imodium works great for those. I take 1 or 2 chewables when I get up (they're right on my nightstand!), to stop that "my homework's due and I don't have it finished" feeling in my gut first thing when I get up. I don't know if you've ever gotten that, but for me it's a reality most mornings, and will mean 4-5 trips to the bathroom before I even get out the door.
I've never overdone it on imodium, and I've taken 20+ pills in a day, to stop several attacks (if I'm stressed, have eaten badly, and am away from home and can't take an hour off to sit on the toilet and get everything out of me, etc.). Imodium in these circumstances lets me put off having an attack until I get home and can evacuate my bowels completely, apologize to my tummy for doing it wrong, and restart my IBS diet.
Hope I've answered your question... Please post back if I can give you any more information!
