My husband has had IBS since Aug. 04 I think from what I can observe here on the boards everyone has IBS to different degrees. So what you need to do for your SFS would be different then my husband but just so you have the information here is what he does. I hope it helps. I believe he has a mild case of IBS-A compaired to others on this board.
When he first started with a SFS he did so twice a day. Before breakfast and dinner. Like you he also does Citrucil (sp?).
He chose not to try the SFS three times a day. The biggest reason is that he, through his diet, was getting plenty of SF.
He also found that he would be full after his glass of SF. So, he would wake-up, make and drink the SFS, take a shower then eat breakfast.
Same for dinner he would drink 1/2 hour to 15 min prior to dinner. (whatever he remembered!) If he was traveling or at a restaurant he would just take a fibercon pill right before with a glass of water.
I agree with Linz just keep working at what is best for you. SFS for my husband are a must when he has gone too long between meals. That is his buffer. It is like he has to start all over again protecting his insides from food.
Now we are in month 5 for him and IBS-A
Over time I have observed that he takes less and less SFS.
He works hard to make sure he is getting Heather's recomended amount of SF though the day (soy, bananas, bread, etc)
He only does his SFS when there are going to be triggers in his diet. Or, if he feel shakey not sure of his insides. Or, if excessive travel which caused stress to his insides.
I don't think that we had the understanding that SFS helped with gas. If anything SFS can cause gas. That is why people have to try different kinds to find the one that works for them. So I am not sure about that part of your question.
Heather says: "To initially stabilize yourself, try taking a soluble fiber supplement first thing in the morning as soon as you awake, before meals, and again before bedtime. Follow the dosage recommendations on the bottles and remember - start at a low dose and gradually increase your intake."
She also says: "The supplements are great to have on hand when you find yourself unexpectedly eating out, going too long between meals, or just feeling a little shaky. Taking a soluble fiber supplement with a large glass of tepid water or IBS-friendly herbal tea will always give you extra protection against attacks in dicey situations."
Listen to your body it will let you know what is working and what is not working . Also I would suggest you only intorduce one new think a week to your diet. Keep a food journal. That includes the probiotics so you can see how your doing.
Sorry this is soooooo long.
