My GI put me on amitriptyline a couple of weeks ago. I, too, have my ibs symptoms first thing in the am. I'm ibs-d. It's like my colon doesn't want to wake up in the am. My first bm is usually normal, but then spasms start coming and I keep having to go. The rest of my day is usually ok. My GI put me on the amit. in hopes of stopping the spasms in the am. He started me on 10mg/ one pill before bedtime. I'm supposed to do that for 2 weeks and if I haven't noticed any diff. to up it to 2 pills before bedtime for 2 weeks and if that still doesn't do anything, up it to 3, but that's it.
I'd say if your problems occur in the mornings to take your 2 before bedtime.(providing your pills are 10mg. ea. if they're stronger, you may want to check with your doc first re: taking both at the same time) So far just taking the one, I haven't noticed any side effects. I'm not sure if I'll up it to 2 next week or not. Seem to be doing better, but maybe 2 would be the magic #. I wouldn't do the alcohol while I'm on them, if I were you.
I wasn't real hep on doing anti-depressants for ibs as I don't seem to have problems that way. However, you need to remember that in the lower dosages and strengths, the anti-depressants are not really anti-depr., but help other problems in the body.
Good Luck Janene
