Okay, imagine you are your colon. During a flare, you are inflamed and angry red; you may even bleed or swell. Imagine how that feels to have anything on top of it. Now imagine what you will do with that substance. Hang on to it or get rid of it as quickly as you can? Probably the latter of the two, right?
Any time you eat, your bowels start to push waste through and that can be painful. It may not be what you are eating at all, just that you are eating. But it is important to stay nurished as the malnurished patient goes into a downward spiral as they can't help to heal themselves.
My suggestion is that you try some of the foods (especially the gentle ones like bananas and oatmeal for breakfast, fish and rice for lunch and chicken and pasta for dinner, etc.) on Heather's diet while you are in a flare. When you start feeling better, you can introduce other foods. Be sure to also avoid foods that cause gas such as the beer, carbonation, broccoli and other gaseous vegetables.
