Sherri,
Smart lady you are and I applaud you!!!!!
I'm sorry about your mom having to have surgery but sometimes it's a must. I'm fine with the goiter (it's tiny) and no need to remove anything so far. Nonetheless I keep a tight control on my TSH levels and have blood work every 3 months, adjusting the med levels if I need to.
It is totally possible that you can avoid having a thyroid problem EVEN with inheriting the probability of getting it. It's when you get into menopause and post menopausal age that you are at the highest risk. Like IBS there is a high percentage of individuals with it, mostly women. Much of it goes undiagnosed because you're not routinely tested for it. Hypothyroidism is often masked and diagnosed as menopause because the symptoms are similar.
I was unaware that there was a connection of wheat to thyroid disease. Want to tell me more? I was diagnosed allergic to wheat at age 30, and not hypothyroid until 47. I don't believe there was a connection but who knows? I'm a first generation hypothyroid and haven't a clue why. I have my suspicions but nothing concrete.
BTW, when you had your mamo, did you have the CA-125 blood test as well? (Very important as IBS can mask the problem there.)
Lots of snow on the mountains surrounding us. If we lived a few hundred feet higher we would have gotten it too. As it is, I'm not a happy camper. I spent 4 hours spraying for weeds (on our 1 acre) yesterday afternoon, only to have it rain like crazy last night. There goes $100 worth of Round Up down the drain!!
