It depends on how much dairy is actually in the package, AND on your own individual tolerance to minute amounts of dairy. When I first started this diet, I realized that my favourite pre-packaged rice sidedishes had "modified milk ingredients" in them, and I only realized it AFTER I had one already cooking on the stove. I didn't want to throw it away, so I ate it anyway, and I was fine. I suppose milk ingredients are added to these things for some reason, because they weren't even dairy-flavoured varieties! They were like Wild Rice and Mushroom, or Rice and Herbs... I could see if they were "butter and herb", or something. Obviously stay away from anything that has a dairy term in the title (like cheese, sour cream, butter, or even the term "creamy"), because that will mean a higher concentration of dairy ingredients.
Just to add - I really do try to avoid all dairy. I don't buy those rice mixes anymore. The ONLY dairy I eat now comes in the form of "less than .5% whey" in my Becel Light Margerine - which I use sparingly anyway.
-------------------- IBS-A since age 12, and fructose sensitive; with the exception of my pregnancy, have been following Heather's diet since Nov. 19, 2007.
Taking 12g of Acacia per day. Relatively stable since March 2008!
