I was itching for something low in fat and sweet, but we were out of chocolate, apple sauce AND bananas, so I figured, hey, I've got maple syrup and pretzels!
I used: 1/2 of real maple syrup 3 large handfuls of salted pretzel sticks (you could use the looped ones as well)
Heat the maple syrup over medium until small bubbles appear along the bottom (I call these fish eggs, because they really remind me of caviar). Turn the temperature down to medium-low. Stir occasionally(I did more than occasionally, as I was worried about it burning, so perhaps stir often/occasionally)? Once the syrup is reduced by about half, turn the burner off and leave the pot to cool for a bit.
In a heat proof bowl, add the pretzels and pour in the syrup, stirring to coat. Spread onto a wax paper lined cookie sheet (for easy cleanup). Let cool until hardened. Break apart any larger pieces into smaller bites.
I tasted a couple of pieces when they were still warm, and they were really, really good! The salt really counters the sweetness, and it's without any artificial sugars. My cookie sheet is currently cooling outside in the snow, because there wasn't enough room in the fridge, and I'm impatient.
I'm not sure how this will turn out cooled, but I think it should be something like a pretzel-y-brittle. Perhaps I'll throw in some peanuts next time?
