1. I used to can pie filling for YEARS when I had a couple dozen apple trees in my yard. (aaaagh!) Took me years to figure out how to do it. Peel, core, and slice up apples, add a bit of lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, etc. just as if you were making a pie, and pack it into quart jars and can it as per directions for canning other fruits (apples, peaches, whatever) and you get canned quart jars of apple pie filling. Piece of cake.
2. Campfire dessert: Back when I used to spend every fall in hunting camp in Oregon, there was this guy who used to show up every year and want to make his special campfire dessert. One box of standard "gingerbread cake mix" and one big can (16 oz?) of applesauce. Mix 'em up, put it into a big coffee can, toast it over the fire. Even I had to admit it was pretty good stuff.
