Steph,
Do you get HGTV (Home and Garden Television)? If so, watch that! They have great decorating ideas. Also, you can go to their website for good ideas (and also DIY, the Do It Yourself Network.) And paint, don't be afraid of paint! The easiest and most inexpensive way to change a room is to paint the walls. I went to a tour of new homes recently (where interior decorators had done the rooms) and they had painted this little girl's room apple green. They used a white matalaisse coverlet on her bed and used throw pillows in bright orange and hot pink. The window treatments were sheer white cotton panels (not the shiny stuff!) with little dots on them. The room was so cute! Everyone ooed and awed over it! They had some kind of dragonflies and butterflies on the wall. I think they were painted freehand or with a stencil. Much easier to change later than a wallpaper border.
And you don't have to spend a lot of money to decorate your house, especially your kids' rooms. Display some of their favorite things on shelves, coat racks, or in inexpensive frames. Take some black and white photos of them (or enlarge some that you have) and matt them in the bright colors such as the hot pink. Put them in simple black frames and voila, you have a cute wall! Frames can get expensive, but you know you can buy the wooden ones at Wal-Mart, get a 99 cent can of black spray paint, remove the glass, and spray them for a great look. Those clear acrylic frames or clip-on frames at Wal-Mart and Michael's are great to display kids' artwork.
Target also has some great kids' bedroom stuff. Or check Goodwill. TJ Maxx and Marshall's have great bedding prices. I love to buy a solid color bedspread (such as the white for girls---just throw it in the wash when it gets dirty!) or a denim or black for boys, and then change the look periodically with throw pillows or different color pillowcases. If you buy the 100 percent cotton matalaise coverlet, be sure and get it a size larger than the bed because it will shrink a size when you stick it in the dryer. I found a great wooden bedside table at Goodwill for $9. It looks just like the one in the Pottery Barn catalog for $499. All I had to do was change the knob on the drawer. My teenage son bought a 2-drawer black metal filing cabinet at Goodwill for $4 and he put bumper stickers all over it. He uses it as a bedside table. It holds his lamp, clock radio, and paperwork inside. What a great find! Oh, wish I could go shopping with you! I love decorating! I am helping a friend in the neigbhorhood redo her kitchen. We've been looking for rugs and accessories. I could do this full-time!
Send me photos and I could really make some suggestions./
