Hey Pretty Lady,

First of all, who's Adrian?

Secondly, what do YOU want to do? It's up to YOU. The most important thing is whether or not you like this job. Do you? Do you want to keep it? Think about it.

Unfortunately, you're the low man on the totem pole. The newbie. While I don't think that entitles them to feed you a lot of crap, unfortunately it does happen in some offices. (In the States, you could file a complaint for it.)

If it were me, Steph, -- not everyone's gonna agree with me here, but I'm gonna tell ya anyway -- if it were ME, and I really liked the job, I'd swallow my pride and take the crap. I'd kiss a** -- I'd clean toilets, serve coffee with a smile, whatever it took, and I'd do it BETTER than anyone else! I'd be the best damn "civie" they'd ever seen, and I'd make everyone fall in love with me.

Let me tell you a little story. (I hear groans from everyone reading this.)

The last job I had was beneath me. WAAAAYYY beneath me. When I started working in 1960, I was a lowly receptionist. I worked my way up to Paralegal for a top law firm over a period of 42 long years. Then, my last job was (are you ready) a receptionist! Max, the senior partner who knew me from another law firm, didn't want to hire me; he said it was SOOOOO beneath me, but I insisted. I wanted to work for him, and this was all that was available. He didn't encourage me at all, never telling me I could end up doing any kind of paralegal work or secretarial work, but I wanted the job and would even accept a receptionist's salary if necessary. He hired me, and even gave me a little more than the last receptionist's pay.

I LOVED working for that man and all the others in that firm -- GREAT law firm -- but that job was totally boring. I decided I was gonna be the best damn receptionist he'd ever seen, including taking the crap from one of the paralegals who enjoyed looking down on me. I swallowed my pride, smiling at her while she threw it at me, and gave her MY BEST. I made the job enjoyable. I even scrubbed floors and washed walls, even shampooed carpets! I got new lighting for the reception area and toned down the overhead lights, making the ambience much more welcoming. My desk was immaculate. I hung a large print on the wall behind me. Everyone commented, including the UPS man (and boy was he cute!)! I kept the kitchen spotless, and made sure there was always fresh coffee and donuts. I organized the supply room and kept it neat at all times. Same with the photocopy area in the back, making sure there was a supply of photocopy paper and that all the paper clips were picked up and spent staples thrown out. I organized the file cabinets and kept the files up to date. The library was up to date and all books put away. I made myself INVALUABLE to that office. And you know what? I enjoyed it. It WAS beneath me, that's true, but I liked keeping that place organized, and everyone loved me -- yep, EVEN the paralegal bitc*! In fact, it was she who ended up sending me all the work to do out of my home after I quit and moved up here.

So you see, I'm probably not the one to ask, because I'm gonna tell you to "suck it up." If you really like the job, Steph, that's what I'd do. Once you make them fall in love with you, you're IN.

Keep us posted.

Bev
