I'm so sorry for your grief. I know how you feel because we had to have our beloved dobbie put down. He was the same age as your dog, and he too had heart problems. It was one of the toughest things I've ever had to do. But please believe that your dog is in a better place now; it's horrible that animals suffer and can't tell you what hurts -- I can't stand it when my dog is in pain.
You'll always remember your beloved dog, even when you get another. And that's my suggestion. We were so grief-stricken that we said, "no more dogs." So we lived through the grief. It was tough.
Don't do what we did. When we finally went out and got ourselves another dog, many years later, it was a Westie, completely different kind from our beloved Dobbie. It was the best thing we could have done. Murphy was SOOOO much fun, and she helped us immensely with all the grief.
We never forgot Max -- and we never will -- he was an exceptional dog. But Murphy was so different, that we loved her too, just as much, but in a kind of different way. Certainly no protection like Max was, that's for sure! But a total lap dog who could hug like Max did not.
We had to get of Murphy, and it broke my heart. We thought she needed company because we were both working at the time, and when we had Max, he was very lonely too; we didn't want Murphy to be lonely like Max was.
So we got another Westie to keep Murphy company. It turned out they hated each other. For 6 years all they did was fight. We couldn't get them to like each other, no matter what we did. One had to go -- it was Murphy.
I still miss Murphy, but not as much as I miss Max. Even to this day. You'll always miss your dog too, just accept the fact. BUT you can give all that wonderful love to another pet, a different pet, maybe a totally different kind, like we did, and it does not mean that you're not being true to the older beloved dog.
Please give it some thought. My heart goes out to you.
Bev
