Spokane Building Council puts off adoption of BBQ, Christmas tree bans

SPOKANE -- The State Building Code Council has delayed the July 1st start of rules that would ban some barbecues from apartments and Christmas trees from churches and schools.

Meeting in Spokane Friday, the council adopted emergency rules that will open the issues for public comment for possible adoption or changes by the end of the year.

The rules are part of international fire codes that the council was asked to adopt in Washington state.

Instead, the council amended one rule to allow fresh-cut Christmas trees in most public places without sprinkler systems and declined to adopt rules banning gas and charcoal barbecues in apartments.

Council members expressed reluctance to intrude into lifestyles , but say there are public health and safety issues involved.

The council provides independent analysis and advice to the Legislature and governor on state building code issues.
