Your sweater sounds really cute. I used to work with a lady that wore cats on everything because she loved cats, too. I thought it was cool.
Maybe a good answer when she said "you look nice....why?" you could have said, "thanks, I've already gotten several compliments on this sweater so I'm glad you noticed". I know it is hard but just try and ignore the (doesn't know what cool fashion is) dummy.!
Anyway, I feel like going over there and kicking her butt!! When you get home give those beautiful dogs a hug and you will feel better.
