Golden Retrievers are MARVELOUS dogs. They're SOOO easy-going! Great for kids! We had a doberman back in the '80s, and I loved him very much, but he did NOT like being hugged. He liked a hand on him, but NO HUGGING! Well, I'm a hugger, so I forced him to hug me. I'd sit down on the floor in front of him, wrap my legs and arms around him, and squeeze. He hated it, just HATED it! He tolerated me, but wasn't happy until I let him go.
When we got our little Westie, MacKenzie, one of the things I wanted most was a hugger. Turns out he's no hugger either -- just a licker. So many dogs don't like that feeling of being "confined." MacKenzie will climb all over me, and play and have a good time, but he sure doesn't like it when I wrap my arms around him. Just like the dobbie, he tolerates it, but not well.
I too am allergic to pet dander. Forget cats! Oy Vey! And you're right about fish -- too slippery. EW.
