What would you do? (Job-related)

There's another job opening up in my company that one of my superiors wants me to apply for. This person is not my immediate boss.

My immediate boss asked if I'd applied for it. I told him I was still on the fence. He told me he wasn't going to pressure me to apply for it. Okay.

I'm on the fence for a few reasons. One is I really like my current position and I really like working for my particular boss. Another is when I applied to advance in my old company, I ended up getting let go about a year later because of "budget cuts." (Really, it was because of personality conflicts...new boss didn't like me.)But on the other hand, I have the impression they want me to move up. And, to a certain extent, I am probably a bit over qualified as and exec. assistant. But I don't want to fall on my face or bite off more than I can chew. And yet, I don't know how I'd deal with the rejection if I didn't get it. I just am unsure what to do. Thoughts?
