A surgeon just does a rectal exam. It takes about 2 min. and doesn't hurt. He may also have you strain to see what is coming out. That's what I did. That is how rectal prolapse is diagnosed...the Dr. looks at it. I still don't understand how a FS will check to see if you have hemerroids. They can be diagnosed with a rectal exam as well. And it's WAY easier. No prep, no recovery. Just a couple minutes of the Dr. checking things out. A rectocele may need further testing. It's more internal, so the Dr. needs to see inside. That's not as fun...a defecograph. Anyway, I hope you get the answers you need. And don't be afraid to be assertive with the Dr. Don't let him drag things out. Tell him you want to see a surgeon...keep the ball rolling. The sooner you get a firm diagnosis (positive or negative) the sooner you can work on getting it fixed or stop worrying about it. Unfortunately most doctors aren't all that great. You have to be informed and be assertive. HTH.
