I don't know technically what is different, but I think they treat different conditions. I have been to a GI and he did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me. I just started seeing a colon/rectal surgeon last week, and he's pretty sure I have a rectal prolapse. And he is soooo much nicer than the GI I went to. My GI did the colonoscopy/endoscopy stuff. The C/R doc did a rectal exam on the first visit. Probably something I should have had a long time ago. And the C/R doc actually performs surgery...he is a surgeon. I don't konw if GIs do surgery or not. I'm sure you could find some info if you search the internet. But from my experience I got way more help from the C/R surgeon.
