I think it seems like you are already leaning towards deferring which you should do if that is what you really really think, but here's my take on it.
Okay so keep in mind that I'm coming from pretty much the same thing as you....I would just keep going and get it done with. I know things are so crazy, but if you think that you can make it through your classes with grades good enough to pass then I would keep it up and not put yourself so far behind in loans and time. I am such a perfectionist as I know you are too, and anything but an A really gets me mad, but if I was in this position, I know I would just bust my butt now for a couple weeks of sleepless nights then end up trying to do it all again. I know even after my 2nd year I was so ready to quit or take it easier or something, but I couldn't be more glad that I stuck it out and just finished.
So much of our career in learned on the job and while the things you learn in school are REALLY important, I don't think it is going to do you any huge favors to put yourself so far back just to perfect a few of your skills. I have no doubt that you have some quality work for your portfolio and if you aren't comfortable with it as far as applying for jobs with it, then spend your time after graduation maybe fixing up a few projects. Jobs aren't going to look at your grade point average, but your work and the skills you can offer, and even then they are going to expect to have to train you more. If you can just make it to passing your classes and graduating you can get internships before starting a real job even to learn more and still not have to put yourself so far back in loans and such.
I just know from my point of view, that even when I would be freaking out about getting projects done (even though I know I have experienced nothing like you have in the past few weeks) I would just not fathom being able to motivate myself to repeat a whole semester like that. And look at your classmates, can you honestly look at them all and say that you are the worst in the bunch? I know that can't be true. Even though this is about you and what feels right to you, your peers are the people you will be judged against in the job field, and if you find yourself to be on the same level as them at this time then you shouldn't worry yourself.
Of course remember that this is about you and if you are still thinking that you really need to defer and go this other route, then you know your position better than anyone. I would definitely get some advice from professors or other people at school or in the job scene. Is there any chance you can just get an extension on your stuff? I know my school would do that when medical reasons were to blame.
Don't make this a rash decision. Seriously think it over - which I know you are doing. Good luck, I know this must be tough. But you know yourself more than anyone else and if it feels right then that is what's right. This only one tiny portion of your life though, and you have to think if 5 more months in school would benefit you far beyond what being in the workplace would do during that time. Email me if you want to.
Lots of hugs!!!
