Sometimes I feel that my panic attacks get worse if I try to take control, so I have to accept that the panic attack is happening and that I can't make myself stop it. However, if you decide to take a Xanax don't feel like you're not in control. I have lorazepam for really bad attacks and when I take it I think of it as pressing a reset button in my brain - it calms me down and in a similar manner calms down my IBS attack/symptoms. I think this sounds like one of those times you should take a Xanax. I don't know if this is what you want to hear, or if you just want some hugs, so I'm sorry if I've said too much. Take care!
