in my biological rhythms class last term, we discussed melatonin, and my professor (who does research in that area) said that long term use can increase risk of autoimmune disorders.
The FDA doesn't regulate supplements at all, and since melatonin is a naturally occuring substance, it's considered a supplement. Therefore, there hasn't been safety and effectiveness studies done like with FDA approved medications.
