I've never been pregnant, but I always wonder about the "tell or don't tell" thing. Why not tell close friends? Wouldn't you want to share both the good and the potential bad with them? I know a lot of pregnant women opt not to say anything until they exit the saftey zone. Maybe I'll change my mind when I'm pregnant someday, but right now, I think I'd tell family and friends pretty much straight away. I think I'd wait at work, and that's about it.
