Until the kids are toddlers, I don't think a small space will be an issue. We lived in an 1100 sq foot apartment and did great until we adopted my son...at the time the kids were three and four and very mobile so we needed to buy a house but while the babies are little, I don't think the space will be a huge issue. Of course house-hunting with two babies might be challenging too! OK...I guess I was totally NOT helpful.
