My hair person finally explained about hair color to me recently but I don't know if I can explain it myself. The hair color is made up of yellow, red and blue tints. The blue is ash and the red is amber and the yellow is plain blonde. So if you have red highlights to begin with like me then if you use a dye for amber hues it will be too red. That is why they use ash on me and it comes out pretty. So only get the amber if you have very ash hair highlights. Don't go more than 2 shades differently. If you are just dying for the first time you will be fine, otherwise you have to remember a lot more information about how color can't lift color and so the roots end up a different color. I totally wish I didn't have to color but I have a lot of gray for my age.
